*Warning SPOILERS. Do not read unless you have seen Outland Episode 9.* This past weekend saw the return of 'Outlander' and boy was I excited. 'Droughtlander' was finally coming to an end!!!! So Sunday morning while the boyfriend tucked into his soccer, I queued up Outlander and settled in to be reunited with Jamie and Claire. And the episode did not disappoint!!! Not satisfied with just having 50 minutes or so of Jamie and Claire time I decided to turn to the internet to read further discussions on the episode. However I was a bit shocked by the discussions concerning Claire's spanking scene. First off, I should say I found the scene somewhat humourous. I did not read the books first so knew nothing about it beforehand. However I thought that the way it was handled was very good. In a historical context Jamie was well within his right to punish his wife for disobeying his orders. For some that concept maybe hard to wrap our 21st century brains around, but in the end it wasn't over the top-meaningless-violent abuse. In this historical place it made sense. And yet article after article addressed this scene. Some mentioned the producers of the show, saying they should worry what the response would be. Other's wrote that they wouldn't watch the episode because of the scene and it's violent nature and this really sent my mind whirring. Does 'Outlander' not exist in the same world where '50 Shades of Grey' and it's movie partner were best sellers? Does 'Game of Thrones' not display violence and abuse on a weekly basis? What about any of the crime shows that are on TV? Was an 18th century Scotsman, spanking his wife who had disobeyed his direct order putting not only her own life in danger but countless others really so bad or risqué? My answer is no and yet I wonder why so many others would disagree with me. What had they seen that I hadn't seen. Then again I thought '50 Shades of Grey' was disgusting, stalkerish drivel, so you know, to each their own. What do you think readers? Let me know in the comments.
